Fear of Greatness

October 16, 2015

Lately I've been being approached with great opportunities and possibilities for my future. I've also been working my butt off on a web series I'm developing and that's been going very well. I start with this not to brag, but to explain my fear. Between the opportunities, possibilities, and success I'm petrified. I'm afraid that I'll acheive. I can understand if that doesn't make sense. I've heard people say things like this and gotten confused. Don't we want to achieve? Don't we want to follow our dreams? The answer is yes. We WANT to, but we also want to be safe.

When I begin to feel this way I remember that great things never come from comfort or safe zones. Great things come when you're scared and you challenge yourself. I keep telling myself this, but I find myself still having this fear of greatness. My favorite thing to do when I start feeling this way is pray and talk to my family or someone I care about. Usually after that I'm calm and ready to go out and be great. Another thing I've found helpful is to remember this poem by Marianne Williamson.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously
give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

-Marianne Williamson
