The Wiz Live just aired and it was everything we could have asked for and more.
The cast was filled with stars that are well known as some that are newer to the game. Shanice Williams, a new fresh faced 19 year old, took on the lead as Dorothy. Finishing up the legendary crew was Elijah Kelley as the Scarecrow, Ne-Yo as the Tin Man, and David Alan Grier as the Cowardly Lion. The talented foursome kept everyone on the edge of their seats and in the emotions of the show right along with them. Other stars that graced the screen were Amber Riley, Queen Latifa, Mary J. Blige, Common, Uzo Adula, and Stephanie Mills. Every character on the stage completely owned their roles and won over the hearts of viewers.
As if the talented leads weren't enough, the ensemble and crew was filled with even more to be in awe of. The ensemble never missed a beat and helped set the scene to keep the audience in the moment. The costume designer, Paul Tazewell, clearly is a visionary ahead of his time. Each costume was intricate and embodied the character wearing it. The choreographer, Fatima Robinson, was also incredible between incorporating classic musical theatre moves to throwing in present day dances like the dab and the drop. The director, Kenny Leon, completed the team and made everyone one on the stage shine like a star. The whole show was made to incorporate classic old memories of The Wiz and new things that made younger viewers chuckle and feel involved. It even included a new song written by Elijah Kelley and Ne-Yo. (The song was amazing and inspiring to say the least.)
Overall if you missed The Wiz Live you need to find a way to see it ASAP!! On-Demand, catch a re-airing, watch it with your friends who got it on DVR, or wait for the DVD to come out December 22. Whatever you do, make sure you see this amazing production and pure example of Black excellence!!
