Originally I wasn’t really in to the idea of Queer Eye it because I remember the original show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. I think I was too young to really appreciate it. In the spirit of reboots and reimagining old shows, I decided to watch this with an open mind. I’m so glad I did.
I sat down with the intention of watching one episode before moving on to something else. Somehow I ended up watching the entire season. The premise of the show is five gay men with different areas of expertise change and elevate another man’s life. There’s Antoni Porowski who handles nutrition and cooking. Bobby Berk who literally helps you get your house in order with interior design. Tan France comes in to help men find their personal style. To help with grooming, skin care, and beauty there’s Jonathan Van Ness. Then finally to help motivate and add some culture to the lives of these men is Karamo Brown. I’m in love with every single one of them.
The coolest thing about this show to me is it isn’t just about a makeover. Though every man on the Queer Eye team has their area of expertise, they all motivate their main subject to feel better and be better. Another great thing that comes out of this is open minded conversations. In one episode they discuss gender norms. In another they discuss police brutality. Then later they address the stereotypes placed on gay men generally and in specific communities.
I could truly go on and on about how great this show is, but you have to check it out for yourself! If not for all the reasons I just listed, do it to feel motivated. I personally feel pushed to elevate my life in more aspects after watching this. If there’s a season two, maybe they can break the format a little and come help me get my life together. I would absolutely love that. Check out Queer Eye now streaming on Netflix!
